Discharge & Military Records

Your military discharge papers, commonly known as a DD-214, are an important part of accessing veteran benefits and services. These documents may be needed for VA benefits, health care, burial benefits, home loans, employment preferences, and more.

The Lenawee County Department of Veterans Affairs can assist veterans and their families in locating and obtaining these records.

Do you Already Have Your Discharge on File Locally?

Many veterans recorded their discharge paperwork with the Lenawee County Clerk at the time of separation from service.

If your discharge has been recorded locally, our office can help you locate and obtain a copy quickly and at no cost.

Contact our office to check if your discharge paperwork is already on file.

Need a Replacement DD-214?

If your discharge is not recorded locally, you still have options to request a replacement copy.

National Archives
Veterans and next of kin may request a DD-214 online through the National Archives. This is available for most veterans who served after World War I.

Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA)
If you were a Michigan resident at the time of your discharge, you may also request a copy through the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.

Correcting Military Services Records

To correct or upgrade a DD Form 214, use DD Form 293 (Application for the Review of Discharge) if discharged within the last 15 years. For discharges over 15 years ago, or if previously denied by a review board, use DD Form 149 (Application for Correction of Military Records) to the appropriate Board for Correction of Military Records.
