Healthy Habits for a Safe and Fun Summer in Lenawee

Summer is in full swing here in Lenawee County, and it’s the perfect time to get outside, be active, and enjoy everything our beautiful community has to offer. Whether you’re headed to one of our lakes, the playground, or just lounging in your backyard, keeping a few health and safety tips in mind can help make this summer your best (and safest) one yet.

Drink Like a Fish (But Stick to Water)

Staying hydrated is essential during hot weather. With all that sunshine and activity, your body needs extra water to stay cool and function properly. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty—sip water throughout the day, especially if you’re sweating or spending time in the sun. Keep a reusable water bottle with you, and try to steer clear of sugary sodas or caffeinated drinks, which can actually make dehydration worse.

Don’t Let the Sun Roast You Like a Marshmallow

Sunshine is great—but too much of it can leave you red, sore, and at risk for long-term skin damage. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and remember to reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Throw on a hat, grab your sunglasses, and wear lightweight long-sleeved clothing when you can. And if you can, take a break in the shade during the sun’s strongest hours (10 AM to 4 PM).

Helmet Hair, Don’t Care

Whether you’re biking, scootering, or skating, wearing a helmet is one of the easiest ways to protect your brain. Make sure helmets fit snugly and sit level on the head—not tilted back. Also check your bike to make sure the tires, brakes, and chain are in good shape. Kids should be supervised during outdoor play, and everyone should know and follow the rules of the road.

Buzz Off, Bugs!

Mosquitoes and ticks love summer too—but they can carry diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease. Protect yourself by using insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. If you’re walking in tall grass or wooded areas, wear long sleeves and pants, and do a tick check afterward (yes, even behind your ears and between your toes!).

Scrub-a-Dub-Dub, Germs Be Gone

With so many outdoor activities, picnics, and public places, handwashing is a must. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds—especially before eating and after playing outside, using the restroom, or touching shared surfaces. When soap and water aren’t available, hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol is a good backup.

Farm-Fresh & Fitness-Fueled

Summer is the season of fresh produce and easy ways to stay active. Visit a local farmers market and load up on fruits and veggies for snacks, smoothies, and salads. Looking to move more? Walk, bike, swim, garden, or just dance around your kitchen—whatever gets you up and going counts as activity.

Summer Fun Starts with Good Habits

From backyard BBQs to bike rides at the park, summer memories are better when they’re healthy and safe. By taking a few simple steps—staying hydrated, protecting your skin, preventing bug bites, and practicing good hygiene—you’re setting yourself and your family up for a season full of wellness and fun.
