The Lenawee Department on Aging is issuing an urgent call for volunteer drivers to assist with home-delivered meals throughout the month of December. Several longtime volunteers are temporarily unavailable, creating an immediate need to ensure older adults across Lenawee County continue receiving hot meals and essential wellness checks during the winter season.
The Department on Aging emphasizes that volunteering does not require a long-term or frequent commitment. Many drivers prefer to choose a schedule that works best for them—whether that’s once a week, once a month, or simply stepping in when their work or personal schedule allows. Any amount of availability is welcomed and appreciated.
“We are asking our community to step in during this time of need,” said Cari Rebottaro, Director of the Lenawee Department on Aging. “We are grateful for help in any form. Even one day of volunteering can make an enormous difference in the life of a homebound older adult, especially during the cold winter months and the holiday season.”
No special training is required, and volunteers receive full support and orientation. To help new volunteers feel comfortable, the department offers opportunities to pair with a seasoned driver for a “try it out” delivery day. This ride-along approach allows individuals to see how the process works and ask questions while shadowing an experienced volunteer.
Additionally, volunteering can be a meaningful shared experience. Friends, spouses, or coworkers are encouraged to deliver as a team, turning a simple act of service into quality time together while supporting older adults in the community.

As the holiday season reminds us of the importance of caring for one another, the Department on Aging invites community members to step forward and make a meaningful difference. A small act of service can bring comfort and dignity to a neighbor in need. With winter weather and increased demand for services, the need for volunteers is more urgent than ever. Stepping in now ensures uninterrupted meal delivery and continued support for some of our most vulnerable residents.
