A Course on Responsible Boating

The main purpose of the boater safety education course is to train knowledgeable, safe, and responsible boaters. 

Topics covered include general boating and water safety, navigational rules, causes and prevention of crashes, operation and fueling techniques, environmental concerns, and reporting responsibility.

Description:

Any motorized boat operator born after June 30, 1996 is required by law to pass an approved boater safety course and to carry with them a boater safety certificate.

In addition, boater eductation is also required for all PWC operators born after December 31, 1978.

Michigan boater education course is taught by dedicated marine sheriff's deputies and Michigan conservation officers.

About the Course:

  • In personal, traditional classroom setting
  • Lecture and hands on demonstrations
  • Written test (75% or better to pass)
  • No minimum age required; however, students 10 and under must be accompanied by a parent or older sibling.
  • Pre-registration is required by going online.

Class is taught by Certified DNR Recreational Safety Instructor/Lenawee County Sheriff's Office Marine Deputy Jerry Lawson and Lenawee County Sheriff's Office Marine Deputy Verne Carr.
