[ARCHIVED] Planned Upgrade to Detroit's NWS System

This Public Information Statement is Shared from the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac MI

The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, MI will be conducting a required, scheduled upgrade to the Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) from Monday June 2 through Wednesday June 4, 2025.  This required, scheduled update to AWIPS at the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, MI will occur regardless of ongoing or expected weather conditions.
 
Forecast operations during the upgrade period will be managed by the National Weather Service office in Gaylord, MI. No impacts to core services of forecast products and weather watches, warnings and advisories are expected to occur during the upgrade period. Radar data from KDTX radar will continue to be available.
 
 However, the following services will be impacted:

  • All NOAA Weather Radio transmitters maintained by the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, MI will be off the air for the entirety of the update. This includes the following transmitters: Detroit/Southfield, Flint, Adrian, Bad Axe, and Sandusky.
  • The Wednesday June 4, 2025 NOAA Weather Radio Weekly Test will be postponed until Wednesday June 11, 2025.
  • Radar data from the TDTW terminal radar will be unavailable during the upgrade period.
  • Some local forecast graphics and data available on the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, MI webpage may be unavailable for the entirety of the update.
