Help Crime Stoppers find suspects in a 1982 fatal fire near Deerfield
Lenawee County Crime Stoppers needs your help to find the person or persons responsible for a fatal fire that claimed the lives of two 17 yr. old Deerfield High School sophomores, more than 27 yrs. ago.
At 12:43 a.m. on May 10th, 1982, firefighters were dispatched to a house fire at 5118 Pieh Hwy., located about three miles from the Village limits of Deerfield. Upon their arrival, firefighters found the two-story home fully engulfed by flames.
The bodies of David Ray Cole, who lived at the house, and his best friend, Timothy Paul Fowler, were found in the windowless bathroom of the house. The bathroom was located adjacent to the kitchen, where fire investigators believe the blaze started.
Cole's mother Sandra Hall, and his stepfather, Matt, were out of the State visiting relatives when the fire took place.
Both youths were found in their street clothes, according to fire investigators, indicating that they may have been awake when the fire started. Police ruled the fire "suspicious" in nature and were unable to determine why the boys sought refuse in the bathroom of the structure and didn't leave the house after the blaze began.
