Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS):  (517) 264-5228

CSHCS is a federally mandated program within the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) that offers assistance for children, and some adults, with special or chronic health care needs.  This program may also supplement existing health insurance by covering co-pays and deductibles for children, under age 20, that have a CSHCS qualifying condition.  Persons age 21 years and older, with certain blood clotting disorders or Cystic Fibrosis, may also qualify for CSHCS.

CSHCS covers more than 2,000 diagnoses.  Some of the more common diagnoses that may qualify for CSHCS coverage may include:

cancer, cerebral palsy, cleft lip, cleft palate, clubfoot, spina bifida,

hearing loss, certain heart, neurological and genetic conditions, and insulin-dependent diabetes

A medical doctor reviews a child's medical information to determine eligibility for the program.  Approval to enroll in CSHCS is based on the severe and chronic nature of the child's medical condition not on the family's income.

CSHCS may also be able to assist enrolled clients with referrals for specialty care providers as well as provide support for coordination of other health care, insurance benefits and services of community agencies.
