Dear Guest:
We faced many challenges and opportunities throughout the past year but are pleased to report the state of the county is very good. Our employees, once again, assisted in the management of county government with sound fiscal management. Accordingly, we did not have to use any money from our fund reserve to balance the 2008 budget. Lenawee County did face a number of set-backs in the manufacturing area with three plant closings. However, some of our current companies added to their employment roles and we have a number of opportunities for new manufacturing to locate here in 2009. The Board of Commissioners, while cutting cost in every area during the 2009 budgeting process, increased funding for economic and agriculture development understanding the only way out of this economic imbalance will be to grow our way out
As we look back at our goals for the 2007/2008 legislative term we completed or had substantial impact on a majority of our targets.
Economic Development
New Director/CEO in-place
Brownfield Authority established - grant in progress
Investigating a county land bank
Revitalized the county 501 (c) (3) Economic Development Corporation
Put in place a consultant to work on alternative energy opportunities
Passed a "Green" resolution and committed to a 2009 policy
Local area collaboration through quarterly legislative dinner programs
Established a marketing plan for our airport
Increased airport services through the purchase of the FBO
211 telephone assistance system began January 12, 2009
Cost savings
Retrofit of Judicial Building for both green initiative and cost savings
Health savings plans adopted
Cellular telephone package for all departments
We look forward to 2009 working together with our employees, residents and businesses to generate a positive influence for Lenawee County. The Board of Commissioners thanks each and every county employee for their hard work and dedication creating sound fiscal management for the county and all our residents.
Kind regards,
Jim Van Doren
Board Chair
