The Lenawee County Solid Waste Department was established through a Solid Waste Management Plan approved by the State of Michigan.
The Solid Waste Dept. is funded through host tipping fees received from The Adrian Landfill owned by Allied Waste (Republic).
There are several goals. Two of them are:
1. Create an environment conducive to recycling and assist the private and public sectors in instituting recycling programs.
2. Increase recycling by 1% of the total waste stream per year through 2007.
The Solid Waste Dept. is an educational department with three main programs:
*Rural Recycling
*Proper disposal of Household Hazardous Waste
*Backyard Composting
Education is provided through displays, exhibits, collections, and presentations.
